Firtan & Bezwering - Musicon The Hague, 16 October 2026

Firtan came to town. I knew this by their succesfull advert on FB, which contrary to some other bands appeared lots of times on my feed. Actually I would know anyway as I follow Musicon's agenda always being my home venue. When than last week I was asked if I could host Firtan it was an evening to look forward to on various levels. I hardly know the band as I only listened to some clips in advance. Black Metal is not a home match for me, but live I can be surprised pleasantly which would be the case twice tonight.

Openers were Bezwering from The Netherlands. They play Black Metal and sing in Dutch. Being it Black Metal it does not mean the untrained ear can get the lyrics. What stood out most from the start is the fact that they have two vocalists on stage. One for the proper Black Metal screaming and the other sort of reciting with the necessary pathos. I liked this change between them, but with the stage not being very big they could not hide really when not participating. The band meanwhile went through their discography I guess and I did like what I saw. Not necessarily music to play at home for me, but I shall check them out again when playing in the area.

Firtan took the stage after a short break and here the first outstanding point was the girl with the violin. Adding flavour when necessary her role came to a peak when she had a solo spot near the end of the set, which I liked quite a bit. Firtan are touring in support of their latest album Helios, which was released begin this month. As I do not know their music really I could not tell how much of this album was played. What did matter was the performance and again I was positively surprised by the show. Firtan might play Black Metal, but there are many other influences blended in and especally the guitar work made me sense some progmetal too. Vocals never go easy on you and the blasts and  heaviness overall is remained throughout their set. At the end they fooled us by telling their last song would be played. In Musicon bands can not really leave the stage to come back, so we thought it was over when they aske if we wanted a Zugabe. Yes we did. This meant a very fine evening in Musicon yet again. Two bands convincing and Firtan being nice enough to wipe the black stripes of their faces and bodies before making a mess of our sheets. A few closing drinks were had at home and an early breakfast before they headed to Kassel. Go see them on tour as this is an evening well spent.
